THE MARVEL OF THE MANHATTAN
The Manhattan might just be one of the most famous pairs of sunglasses in movie history. Originally worn by the illustrious Audrey Hepburn in her starring role as Holly Golightly in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, the sunglasses have gone on to be as iconic as the film itself.
Of course, we are under no illusions that the allure of The Manhattan was down to its celebrated past, but that being said, few frames have sustained the magnetism, charm and wearbility of this elegant cat eye. Today, The Manhattan continues to be worn by some of the most famous and beautiful faces in the business and we are proud to be perched on so many of them.
The British supermodel and style icon Kate Moss snapped up a pair in Grape, a deep shade of pink from her local opticians in Primrose Hill. Actress Kate Beckinsale, another British beauty has worn The Manhattan with such aplomb, she’s rarely photographed without them. Worn in her signature black, The Manhattan compliments the contours of her face perfectly, and has been worn with everything from her gym gear to red carpet attire. The Italian fashion journalist Anna Dello Russo also owns a pair in black and have been worn to many a fashion week.
Actress Anne Hathaway wore The Manhattan in her role as Lou Miller in Ocean’s Eight alongside, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling and Sarah Paulson (to name a few). She has gone on to wear several more Oliver Goldsmith designs off screen including The Gopas. Since working with Hathaway on Ocean’s Eight, she went on to personally request Goldsmith as the eyewear of choice for her most recent film The Hustle.
The hilarious new comedy is a remake of the 1988 film, ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ which famously starred Michael Caine, who rather ironically, is another Goldsmith icon. Together, Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as female con artists, one low rent, the other high class who team up to take down the men who have wronged them. The film features a plethora of incredible outfits and costumes, and we were delighted to provide a selection of eyewear for the film. During the film, Rebel Wilson wears The Manhattan in pink with a gold mirrored lens. She looks fantastic in them, and it just goes to show what an adaptable shape The Manhattan is. From Hepburn to Rebel and the difference of nearly sixty years, yet this sunglass still looks as modern and stylish as ever.
In eyewear there often isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ option – faces are so wonderfully different and that is the joy of eyewear; finding a pair that compliments both your face and personality. The Manhattan does however manage to capture the very unique ability of suiting many different face shapes and is the antidote to any woman struggling to find a pair of sunglasses they love. It’s oversized, yet in proportion, a cat-eye, yet has soft features and it is bold without being ostentatious. If you are going to invest in one pair, then The Manhattan is a sure fire win. If Hepburn can wear it in 1961, Moss in 2013 and Rebel in 2019, then there is a guaranteed longevity to this beautiful pair of sunglasses.
