Oppenheimer is the newly released biographical thriller film written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. It is based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the first nuclear weapons on the Manhattan Project.

Oppenheimer is set during World War II and the attention to detail is unparalleled.  The film has already captivated audiences not only with its compelling story but also its impeccable fashion choices. From the stylish attire to the accessories, the film showcases a unique style that has caught the attention of fashion enthusiasts around the world.

The costume designers have meticulously recreated the fashion trends of the 1940’s. Perfectly tailored suits, elegant dresses, and attention to detail in every outfit which creates a visually stunning aesthetic.

Which sunglasses were worn in Oppenheimer?

One of the standout accessories in Oppenheimer are the sunglasses and glasses worn by the characters. These accessories not only add an extra layer of style to their ensembles but also help portray their characters' personalities.

The glasses and sunglasses are typical of the early 1940’s.  Round glasses are often associated with intellectualism and creativity – included scientists which of course feature heavily in the film.

Round sunglasses have a vintage charm and are often worn by characters who possess a scholarly or artistic persona. The circular frames can vary in size and material, allowing for a range of interpretations within the film. You can find similar round ‘panto’ styles in the Oliver Goldsmith collection, frames such as Grappa, Zephyr and Oasis  and of course the 1930’s sunglasses.

Aviator Sunglasses are known for their iconic teardrop shape and metal frames.  The aviator was incredibly popular with pilots during the war and is a style typical of this era.  The sunglasses exude a cool and confident vibe. They are often seen on suave and adventurous characters, adding a touch of mystery and allure to their appearance. The Colt Zero, 1940’s and Wiseguy are perfect examples of aviator sunglasses.

Another style that was very typical of the period and feature heavily throughout the film Oppenheimer is the ‘wayfarer’ shape; boxy acetate frames that can be worn as either sunglasses or spectacles. Robert Downey Jr’s character in particular wears a distinctive ‘wayfarer’ shape in a black and crystal split acetate. Frames that emulate this style are the Consul WS, Vice Consul, Rex or the Lord WS – all classic, timeless designs.

The film stars Cillian Murphy as the title character, with a supporting ensemble cast including Emily BluntMatt DamonRobert Downey Jr.Florence PughJosh HartnettCasey AffleckRami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh. Each character’s costume and eyewear has been curated perfectly and the glasses and sunglasses worn perfectly define the characters' style and personality. From the classic aviator, timeless wayfarers, or vintage-inspired round glasses, these accessories play an integral role in creating a captivating on-screen fashion experience.
